Revered and highly awarded Cuban journalist Marta Rojas died earlier this month. This article, written five years ago, describes how Rojas was in Santiago de Cuba at the time of the assault on the Moncada and bore witness to the torture and deaths of the rebels soldiers at the hands of the Batista regime. She transcribed the famous “History Will Absolve Me” speech delivered by Fidel Castro at his trial. In later years she became the first Latin American war correspondent to cover the U.S. war in Vietnam.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 23, 2021, denouncing the U.S. Blockade, discussing Cuba’s fight against COVID-19, and laying out Cuba’s perspective on the world and particularly on imperialism.

This week marks 16 years since the formation of Cuba’s Henry Reeve Brigade, formed by Fidel Castro in response to Hurricane Katrina. There is no individual or group which deserved the Nobel Peace Prize last year, or this year, than the Henry Reeve Brigade, which has been saving lives around the world for 16 years.
