While Cuba has 2000 medical personnel fighting COVID-19 in 26 countries all around the world, the U.S. has intensified its attacks not just on Cuba, but on those very doctors and nurses. Meanwhile the movement to nominate those heroes for the Nobel Peace Prize continues to pick up steam.

Too many days have passed since the terrorist attack against the Cuban embassy building in Washington, which occurred in the early hours of April 30, and the United States government still has had no official contact about this hateful act with Cuban authorities in both Washington and Havana. Cuba has several advantages over many states, including free universal healthcare, the world’s highest ratio of doctors to population, and positive health indicators, such as high life expectancy and low infant mortality. Also, with a centrally planned, state-controlled economy, Cuba’s government can mobilize resources quickly. But Cuba faces problems as well, including the fact that COVID-19 tests cost around $50 each.

Cuba’s early entry into the biotech industry allowed it to harness international expertise and develop medicines to fight dengue fever and meningitis. One of these, Interferon Alfa-2B, is now being used to combat the effects of COVID-19, writes Helen Yaffe.

For the 28th consecutive year, the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to condemn the immoral, unjust, and completely illegal U.S. blockade of Cuba. The vote this year was 187-3-2, with fascist-led Brazil joining the the U.S. and Israel in opposition to the rest of the world.

Since its entry into force in 1996, the Helms-Burton Act has sought to universalize the economic blockade through brutal and illegal pressures exerted by the United States against third countries, their governments and companies. It is intended to suffocate the Cuban economy and generate or increase shortages among the population with the purpose of imposing in Cuba a government that serves the interests of the US.
