On Sunday, Dec. 6, the Venezuelan people will vote to elect the new deputies of the National Assembly. This election is enormously important for the Bolivarian Revolution. The progressive forces are mobilizing nationwide to win back the assembly from right-wing politicians who won the majority in December 2015. The ANSWER Coalition, of which the Cuba and Venezuela Solidarity Committee is a part, condemns the latest acts of aggression against the government of President Nicolás Maduro and people of Venezuela, attempted by paramilitaries on May 3 near the coastal town of Macuto, and another thwarted infiltration today of eight terrorists, May 4, 40 miles west of Macuto, in Chuao near the sea. The Venezuelan authorities as of the evening of Monday, May 4, indicate that more plots may be unfolding, calling for maximum alert.

Cuba has several advantages over many states, including free universal healthcare, the world’s highest ratio of doctors to population, and positive health indicators, such as high life expectancy and low infant mortality. Also, with a centrally planned, state-controlled economy, Cuba’s government can mobilize resources quickly. But Cuba faces problems as well, including the fact that COVID-19 tests cost around $50 each.
