Marta Rojas: The chronicler of Moncada
Revered and highly awarded Cuban journalist Marta Rojas died earlier this month. This article, written five years ago, describes how Rojas was in Santiago de Cuba at the time of the assault on the Moncada and bore witness to the torture and deaths of the rebels soldiers at the hands of the Batista regime. She transcribed the famous “History Will Absolve Me” speech delivered by Fidel Castro at his trial. In later years she became the first Latin American war correspondent to cover the U.S. war in Vietnam.
